Be brave

Gemma Tognini, 11 Jan 2010

This morning I read the latest post from www.justanotherprblog.com.au

I cried as I read it,  to say her story moving is like saying Mt Everest is a tall hill, that Uluru is a rock in the dirt.  I can’t imagine what it took for her to put that experience, those thoughts and the overwhelming emotion into such a clear and haunting narrative. But she did.  And it was brave.

Last year, two very close friends of ours were diagnosed with cancer. Both lymphomas, both very rare, both thoroughly advanced.  One of these friends is a mother to two little girls; the other is a dad to a little boy of three years.  It shook my husband and I for a whole bunch of reasons. For me, the biggest reasons was that I looked back on my life and felt like I had, in parts, lived quite a fearful existence.  I talked about it with my closest friends and they disagreed.  But rightly or wrongly, that’s how I felt and still do feel.

Reading that post this morning has reinforced my resolution to live a brave life, or at least a braver one than I previously have. This doesn’t mean I’m going to take up hang-gliding or cliff jumping. It does mean that I’m going to try to do more, be more, give more, love more, laugh more.  You get the picture...?

You might be wondering what this has to do with the Speakeasy.  I see things like this. We exist to help people be better communicators – and that looks like a swag of different things to different clients. So take from it what you will but let my message today be loud and clear.

Be bold. Be courageous. Take risks. Dream big. Don’t second guess. Communicate clearly and effectively. Don’t accept second best. Be gracious. Be brilliant. Be inspired.

And when the end of the race comes, let’s hope we can look back and smile because our worlds – professional and personal, will have been about so much more than just ourselves.
